Genko-an

The ceiling of the main hall is called "bloody ceiling" because it was made of the floor of Fushimi Castle where Tokugawa's men were defeated and killed themselves in the battle against Ishida Mitsunari in 1600. Till today, marks of bloodstained palms or footprints can still be seen on the ceiling. "Bloody ceilings" can be found in some other temples in Kyoto.

<< Genko-an - the Window of Realization

There are two windows in the main hall ; a round window named "enlightenment" and a square one named "perplexity". While a round window shows "Zen" and the macrocosm, a square one symbolizes people's lives and shows birth, getting old, sickness, death, and agony.
